WHAT IS A SENTENCE?
A sentence is a group of words explaining a story.
Sentences start with capital letters and end with punctuation marks.
- Frank is a good person.
(Here, Frank is capitalised because it starts the sentence. Also, the sentence ends with the punctuation mark “period(.)” ).
WORD ORDER
Word Order refers to writing sentences correctly.
WRONG:
is girl she a.
CORRECT:
She is a girl.
TYPES OF SENTENCES FOR GRADE 1

STATEMENTS/TELLING SENTENCES
Statements explain a story and end with periods.
- Fred is coming from the supermarket.
- Dan is a boy.
- Gerald will see you now.
- Tom was waiting for you.
QUESTIONS
Questions ask something and end with question marks.
- What is your favourite food?
- When are we going out?
- Where are you going?
- Who is that lady?
EXCLAMATIONS
Exclamations show excitement and express strong emotions. They end with exclamation marks.
- Wow! What an enormous crocodile!
- Yay! We are going for a picnic!
- Ouch! That bee sting hurts!
- Watch out! That car is driving close to you!
COMMANDS
Commands inform one to do something and end with periods.
- Ralph, do your chores.
- Get up from that seat.
- Come out from that room.
- Finish that food.
Sentences can consist of capitalization, punctuation marks, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, determiners, pronouns, contractions, compound words.
