WHAT ARE PUNCTUATION MARKS?

Punctuation marks are symbols that help us understand sentences better.

CAPITALIZATION

We start sentences with capital letters and end them with punctuation marks.

TYPES OF PUNCTUATION MARKS GRADE 1 (PART 1)

Grade 1 punctuation marks (Part 1) are periods, exclamation marks, and question marks.

Periods at the End of a Sentence

Periods end statements. They explain something. We use this punctuation mark at the end of a telling sentence. While reading sentences, we need to pause after a period. Periods end sentences that are not questions or exclamations.

  • She is a girl.
  • The children are playing.
  • Paul is going to school.
  • Bella has a doll.

Exclamation Marks (!)

Exclamation marks show strong emotions or display excitement. They end exclamations.

  • There comes that storm!
  • That crocodile is huge!
  • Ouch! That hurts!
  • Run away from there!
