WHAT ARE PUNCTUATION MARKS?
Punctuation marks are symbols that help us understand sentences better.

Our part 1 article discussed three punctuation marks: periods, exclamation marks, and question marks. This article will dive more into the other uses of periods and a new punctuation mark, colons which are in Grade 1 Punctuation Marks Part 2.

Periods after Titles
We add periods after title names.
- Mr. – Mr. Smith
- Dr. – Dr. Sharon
- Miss – Miss Helen
- Mrs. – Mrs. Smith
Did you notice that there is no period in Miss?
Yes, we do not add periods to Miss!
Periods after Abbreviations of Days of the Week
Periods appear after the abbreviation of names of days of the week.
- Sunday – Sun.
- Monday – Mon.
- Tuesday – Tues.
- Wednesday – Wed.
- Thursday – Thurs.
- Friday – Fri.
- Saturday – Sat.
Commas in Dates
We place our commas between the day and the year on a date.
- I went to a birthday party on May 13, 2022.

Periods after Abbreviations of Months of the Year
Periods exist after the abbreviations of months’ names.
- January – Jan.
- February – Feb.
- March – Mar.
- April – Apr.
- May – May
- June – June
- July – July
- August – Aug.
- September – Sept.
- October – Oct.
- November – Nov.
- December – Dec.
Note: We do not abbreviate May, June and July.
Now that we’ve learned months’ abbreviations let’s abbreviate these dates.

- Aug. 7, 1997.
- Sept. 20, 2010.
Periods after Abbreviations of Street Names
To make street names shorter, we can abbreviate them. Periods can appear after these street abbreviations.
- Drive – Dr.
- Alley – Aly.
- Circle – Cir.
- Road – Rd.
- Street – St.
- Lane – Ln.
- Avenue – Ave.
- Court – Ct.
- Boulevard – Blvd.
- Highway – Hwy.

We put colons between hours and minutes in time.
